Some trips are planned.

Some journeys are destined.

Our Kedarnath Yatra felt like a calling.

One day, the thought came, and before we knew it, the plan was ready. My husband, our 3-year-old son, three close friends, and I set out on what would become one of the most memorable experiences of our lives.

To be honest, we were not fitness enthusiasts. The thought of trekking 22 kilometers on a steep mountain trail was intimidating. I constantly wondered, “Will we really be able to do this?”

Our journey began in Rishikesh, where we completed the yatra registration. From there, we headed to Sonprayag, hoping the gradual altitude change would help our bodies adjust.

The original plan sounded simple.

Park the car, trek to Kedarnath, have darshan, and return the same day.

Reality, however, had different plans.

The moment we started trekking, we understood the challenge ahead. The route was crowded with ponies and palkis. Walkers were constantly stepping aside to make way, and sometimes even getting pushed. The steep climb tested every bit of our endurance.

We took at least ten breaks.

And honestly, that’s okay.

If you’re planning this trek, my biggest advice is this:

Stay hydrated. Listen to your body. Rest when needed. Then start again.

The mountain teaches you that reaching the destination matters more than reaching it quickly.

As we climbed higher, nature kept surprising us.

In a single day, we experienced sunshine, cold winds, rain, and what felt like winter temperatures.

One thing you absolutely must carry is a raincoat.

We forgot ours and had to buy one on the way for ₹100. Trust me, don’t make the same mistake!

But every struggle was rewarded by the views.

The surroundings were beyond beautiful.

The mountains looked unreal, almost as if they belonged to another world.

And for the very first time in my life, I saw a glacier.

No photograph can truly capture that feeling.

After 13 long hours, we finally reached Kedarnath.

Exhausted.

Emotional.

And suddenly very aware that we had completely overestimated our abilities.

The idea of trekking back down on the same day vanished immediately, and we extended our stay.

Then came another challenge.

We learned that normal darshan was taking around 10–12 hours of waiting in line, while VIP darshan still required 5–6 hours.

With a 3-year-old child, both options seemed extremely difficult.

So we made peace with the possibility that maybe we wouldn’t get darshan from inside the temple.

We told ourselves:

“Baba knows our situation. If all we can do is sit peacefully in the temple premises and pray, that will be enough.”

With that mindset, we visited Bhairavnath Temple.

Ironically, the path to Bhairavnath is even steeper than the one inside Kedarnath.

Yet after completing the main trek, it felt like a cakewalk.

We reached there in just 30 minutes.

That evening, through the staff at our stay, we got in touch with a pandit ji. He told us he would try to arrange a special puja and darshan if possible. The cost was ₹3,000 per person, but only if everything worked out.

We returned to our room, uncertain yet hopeful.

And then, at 1 AM, the phone rang.

We were told to come immediately.

Within minutes, we were out of our rooms and rushing toward the temple premises.

To our surprise, there was already a huge crowd gathered for the same purpose.

Still, something felt different.

Something felt guided.

After nearly two hours, we finally entered the Garbhagriha.

At Brahma Muhurta.

Standing inside the sacred sanctum of Kedarnath, offering prayers to Baba, is a feeling I cannot fully describe in words.

After all the doubts, exhaustion, challenges, and uncertainty…

We were finally there.

It was deeply emotional.

Peaceful.

And incredibly special. ❤️

After catching up on some much-needed sleep, it was time to begin our descent.

We assumed going downhill would be easy.

We were wrong.

Every step down made us wonder:

“How did we even climb this mountain yesterday?”

The downhill trek tested different muscles and brought its own challenges.

But slowly and steadily, we made our way back.

Twelve hours later, we finally reached Gaurikund.

Surely the difficult part was over?

Not quite.

Waiting for us was an enormous taxi queue stretching around the bends of the road.

Another two-hour wait later, we finally managed to get a taxi and reached Sonprayag.

Before reaching there, we also visited Dhari Devi Temple.

And just like Kedarnath, it felt magical.

Some places don’t just impress you.

They touch something deep within you.

Looking back, this journey was never just about reaching a temple.

It was about faith when things seemed uncertain.

Patience when plans failed.

Strength when the body wanted to give up.

And grace that appeared exactly when we needed it.

Kedarnath challenged us.

Humbled us.

Blessed us.

And left us with memories that will stay with us forever.

Har Har Mahadev. 🔱
